Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years time? It’s the question most will have faced in a job interview at some point. I’m sure you had a stock response lined up; I always did. In late 2008 myself and Brian Stroud went from steady jobs to business owners, literally overnight.
If you had asked me that question at the time, I would have reeled off something about my hopes and aspirations for our fledgling enterprise. And that, of course, we had a business plan, but in all honesty we we're winging it. On top of that the country was in recession that was crippling the economy. Great time to start a business right?
Well today is our 10th anniversary and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved! What started out as a two-man operation now employs 10 - or 11 with the dog. And our services have grown from web design to a full service creative agency.
One thing I learned very early on was to get the right people in order to grow our service offering. It sounds obvious, but I’m not simply talking qualifications. They have to be a great fit for the business, its personality and with no less than a passion for what they do. Believe me finding people like this is easier said than done.
This is why we are still a small team. Organic growth rather than forced. This has led to a fantastic working environment. Relaxed, but hard working with a hint of just plain silliness thrown in for good measure. The team I have around me is the main reason for the success of Blue House Design, and for that I can’t thank them all enough.
Of course it’s not just staff that makes a business. We also need a generous helping of clients. In the early days our ‘bread and butter’ was working with start up and small businesses. 10 years on and I’m happy to say we are still working with the majority of those companies. But of course times have changed. We now also work with a wider range of organisations including national and international companies.
Back in 2008, I could never have envisaged us launching a brand in the UK for one of Denmark’s largest companies. Or helping clients build entire companies from the ground up, but here we are!
We have fantastic clients many of whom have become good friends. And we still quote every project that lands in our inbox, no matter the size. After all some of the most exciting projects we have delivered were for small start-ups.
10 years in business is definitely something to celebrate. But believe me it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. At times it’s stressful beyond belief. You take it home and quite often wake up in the middle of the night with solutions to problems from the day before. It’s not for everyone, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
So where do I see Blue House Design in 10 years time? Only time will tell…
Sincerely a huge thank you to all our staff, clients and families that continue to support us on this crazy ride running a creative agency.
Here’s to the next 10 years!
